Standard Fare - Temur Aggro Player's Guide [Edward Eng]

As many know by now, I've been on Temur since Khans of Tarkir. I've also tried Mardu Aggro, RW Aggro, Jeskai Tokens, Atarka Red, and Abzan Aggro along the way. But for the most part, Savage Knuckleblade has been at the forefront of my clan this Standard season. My Temur decks have evolved a lot over the course of the season and I've tried many different cards. And of course, I've played many different matchups. Thus, I want to share my insight on the deck and what I see happening with it going forward.

Let's start with my current build.

Standard
Temur Aggro Version  - Edward Eng

Creatures (29)
4 Elvish Mystic
4 Heir of the Wilds
3 Frost Walker
3 Fanatic of Xenagos
3 Boon Satyr
Goblin Rabblemaster
Savage Knuckleblade
Shaman of the Great Hunt
Thunderbreak Regent
Stormbreath Dragon

Spells (7)
Stubborn Denial
Crater's Claws
3 Lightning Strike

Sideboard
2 Destructive Revelry
1 Treasure Cruise
3 Disdainful Stroke
1 Negate
2 Barrage of Boulders
3 Feed the Clan
3 Roast

First off, the deck is difficult to play optimally. You have to sequence your lands properly. Otherwise, you'll Time Walk yourself often. It's a three-color deck and you need to keep in mind which threats you want to deploy over the next few turns. That being said, you need to mulligan hands that don't offer the correct mana base to cast your threats on curve.

Secondly, the deck is often labeled Temur Aggro. However, the deck plays out much more like a tempo deck. Rather than just jam all your threats one after the other, you need to know when to hold up mana for removal or counter magic. On the flip side, you also need to know when to bring the rain.

Finally, there's a good amount of flexibility with sideboarding. Rabblemasters are sometimes bad when you're on the draw so those are some easy slots to fill. But this info isn't something new. More importantly, you might think to just take out the Rabblemasters from the deck. But I've found that to be a pretty bad idea since Rabblemasters still lead to free wins more often than it being a 'dead' card. Frost Walker is also another card that you can side out, especially when you go up against decks that go wide. It's good to note that Frost Walker plays decently against Bile Blight and Draconic Roar. On the other hand, it's not great against Dromoka's Command. The deck also takes quite a bit of damage and doesn't have a way to gain life in the main deck like Abzan does. Thus, I've upped Feed the Clan to three to stem the bleeding against decks like Mono Red and Jeskai Aggro.

Moving forward, it might be correct to shift towards a version more similar to Brian Dolan's.

Standard
Temur Dragons - Brian Dolan

Creatures (23)
Savage Knuckleblade
Stormbreath Dragon
4 Sylvan Caryatid
Thunderbreak Regent
3 Whisperwood Elemental
4 Courser of Kruphix

Spells (13)
Lightning Strike
Stubborn Denial
3 Wild Slash
Crater's Claws

Sideboard
3 Ashcloud Phoenix
1 Encase in Ice
Disdainful Stroke
Feed the Clan
1 Plummet
1 Anger of the Gods
Roast
2 Seismic Rupture

But I have a hard time believing his build has a good matchup against all the control decks running around. However, I do like Ashcloud Phoenix right now. I had one in place of my current Thunderbreak Regent. And it might be right to swap it back in and add two more in place of the Shaman of the Great Hunts.

Feel free to give my Temur deck a test drive and let me know what you think in the comments below or on social media.

Peace, love, and good games...
