Standard Fare - Dragons "R" Us [Edward Eng]

It's a little bit early, but I'm gonna go ahead and say it. Thunderbreak Regent is probably the best card in Dragons of Tarkir. I really think this is where you wanna be in Standard right now. We obviously saw the power it brings to the table via the SCG Open in Syracuse this past weekend with 15 copies of the card in the top 8. All of the decks seem like great shells for the powerful dragon. However, I think there's still a ton of room for exploration with TR. Hence, this just shows us how strong the card is.

Here are a few rough shells.

As you can see it's pretty much a Mono Red list splashing blue for the new Dungeon Geists, namely Icefall Regent. Is it worth it to splash blue just for the frosty dragon? Maybe, maybe not. However, an additional benefit of the splash is that you'd probably be able to play a few blue cards in the sideboard.

Or you can just completely scratch the blue and jam Thunderbreak Regent into a Mono Red shell such as the one I posted here.

It's tough and might even be incorrect to cut Crater's Claws, but this build doesn't turn on the Ferocious mechanic as easily as some other builds. One interesting card in the list is Atarka's Command. I still believe it's one of the more powerful if not the most power Command in Dragons of Tarkir. It just needs a bit more time to shine in the right shell. In this deck, you can dome your opponent for 3 and ramp into Thunderbreak Regent if you have it early. Later in the game you can still dome your opponent for 3 and pump all your dudes FTW or save your crits from opposing dragons and burn-based removal. Thus, Atarka's Command seems good at all points on the curve just like Crater's Claws.

Let me know what you think in the comments or on social media.

Hope to see you all at the State Championships in Dallas this coming weekend.

Peace, love, and good games...
